Introduction

This piece analyses a single month of fieldwork — two weeks of fixed-baseline walking at Coed Cymerau, followed by a deliberate pivot toward peripatetic wandering and a twenty-eight-day phase of Qigong and Tai Chi Chuan — against the theoretical constellation developed across this degree. The aim is not to prove a thesis. It is to test named frameworks against lived, logged, and spoken data, and to report honestly where they held, where they needed correction, and where the data resisted tidy explanation altogether. Method notes throughout are as important as findings: this is autoethnographic research, and the researcher's process of getting things wrong and correcting them in view is treated as data, not noise to be edited out before publication (Ellis & Bochner, 2000).

1. Competence and Capacity: Dreyfus Tested Against the Rock

Dreyfus and Dreyfus's five-stage model of skill acquisition — novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, expert (Dreyfus & Dreyfus, 1986) — describes a single continuous trajectory: rule-bound analysis in the early stages, replaced progressively by intuitive, holistic judgement as expertise deepens. It has no real provision for disruption. The model assumes forward motion from zero; it does not anticipate an expert of many years' standing losing, and partially regaining, access to a competence that was never actually lost in the first place.

Tested directly against a return to real rock during a residential climbing week, the model's limits became concrete rather than theoretical. In the researcher's own account: "I discovered that I can very quickly assess the 'blocks' — physical, mental, or drug-induced — very rapidly once I get my feet and hands on the rock. I didn't experience fear, more extreme frustration at my legs not responding to my wishes either at all or with great discomfort. The competence still exists." This distinction matters methodologically. Fear is the expected response to genuine uncertainty about an external threat. Frustration is what follows when the way is already known and the instrument carrying it out will not comply.

This maps far more precisely onto Polanyi's account of tacit knowledge — "we can know more than we can tell" (Polanyi, 1958) — than onto Dreyfus's staged-acquisition model. The competence was not being rebuilt from a lower rung. It was present, complete, and immediately available the instant a concrete, situated task called on it. What Dreyfus's model would require — a partial re-ascent through the stages — does not match the phenomenology reported. A smaller fraction of what is happening may be genuine relearning, in Dreyfus's sense. The larger fraction is closer to Merleau-Ponty's distinction between abstract and concrete movement, developed through his case study of the brain-injured patient Schneider (Merleau-Ponty, 1945/2012): movement performed on command, out of context, versus movement embedded in a real, purposeful, situated task. Rock is about as concrete and purposeful as movement gets. That the rapid, clear read consistently appears there, and not with the same immediacy on a flat, purposeless walking circuit, is consistent with Merleau-Ponty's account and inconsistent with a straightforward re-acquisition narrative. The researcher's own word for a clinic or gym setting, offered independently of this citation, was "out of context" — arrived at without reference to Merleau-Ponty, and matching his vocabulary closely enough to count as convergent rather than borrowed.

The claim of intact, revealed-rather-than-rebuilt competence requires one further qualification, again supplied by the researcher rather than assumed: "much of everything is one step forward and one back, but perception is afresh each time." This is a materially different picture from steady, reliable access to a fixed underlying competence. It describes genuine oscillation in performance from one occasion to the next, met deliberately with shoshin — beginner's mind, a concept from Zen Buddhism, taught originally by the thirteenth-century teacher Dōgen and popularised in the West by Suzuki (1970), in which even advanced practice is approached without the accumulated expectation that familiarity usually produces. The researcher reports applying this consciously across other skill domains as well as this one. The two claims sit together rather than in contradiction: competence itself may be intact and immediately available, while its expression on any given occasion varies, and is met without the assumption that yesterday's poor showing predicts today's. Dreyfus's model, built around a single accumulating trajectory, has no ready account of oscillation of this kind; shoshin, notably, does not attempt to explain it either — it is a stance for meeting it, not a theory of why it occurs.

A direct test of the abstract/concrete distinction — a movement demanded out of clinical context compared with the same movement demanded by real terrain — remains outstanding at the time of writing. A planned return to real rock is scheduled for the coming month; current lower-limb pain, reported as constant rather than newly arisen, is the stated obstacle to gym-based movement in the meantime. This should be treated as a genuine gap in the evidence rather than papered over: the theoretical distinction is well supported by report, but has not yet been tested with both conditions directly compared within a short window, and any future account of this section should note whether that comparison was subsequently made.

2. The Kinetic Chain and the Epistemology of Clearer Signal

A separate strand of this research, developed several months prior to this reporting period, established a top-down kinetic chain hypothesis: cervical trauma accumulated across six decades — a blunt injury at twenty, whiplash, a shoulder injury from kayaking, repeated pole-related falls — progressively tightening the shoulders, restricting thoracic fascia, altering lumbar curvature, tilting the pelvis, blocking the right hip, and finally manifesting as compensatory loading through a structurally atypical foot. The conclusion at the time was explicit: "the foot wasn't the beginning, it was where sixty years of compensation finally ran out of road."

This month's data appeared, on first inspection, to contradict that model. A change to minimalist five-toed footwear preceded a marked increase in the clarity with which sacral and L1 sensations could be localised and interpreted — a chain apparently running upward from the foot, rather than downward toward it. Properly interrogated, however, the contradiction dissolves into a distinction the researcher drew explicitly, unprompted, when the apparent conflict was raised: "Imagine a closed door. One might surmise what is behind; on opening, the contents are revealed. It is my understanding that has changed in the light of new evidence revealed that has so long been obscured, not that what is occurring has changed." The footwear did not generate a new upward-running causal chain. It removed interference — likely proprioceptive, possibly biomechanical — sufficient for an existing, already-described condition to be read clearly for the first time. This is stated explicitly in the original May analysis: foot-level improvements were characterised there as "downstream effects of something quietly releasing above," not as the origin of release. The same conclusion was reached independently, without reference to that record, a month later — a rare instance of triangulation within a single-subject design, arrived at from two different directions months apart.

A related discrimination emerged this month worth recording precisely: the ability to distinguish a local mechanical foot sensation from a referred neurological signal manifesting at the same site. This is a genuine perceptual skill, developed through sustained, disciplined attention, and it raises a specific anatomical question addressed directly: whether SL12 (sacrum, L1, L2) sensation could radiate to the fingers. It cannot, via the nervous system as ordinarily understood — the lumbosacral plexus (L1–S) and the brachial plexus (C5–T1) are anatomically distinct systems serving the legs and arms respectively, with no direct neural pathway between them. Any cross-region communication observed — and shoulder tension has since been reported easing in parallel with the sacral work — is more plausibly explained by continuous fascial and postural compensation than by nerve conduction, consistent with the original top-down model's actual mechanism, which was never a claim about nerve radiation in the first place.

A caution belongs here regarding a related claim raised during this reporting period: that footwear changes were producing skeletal realignment reaching the spine. Vibram, manufacturer of the footwear in question, settled litigation in 2014 specifically over unsubstantiated marketing claims including spinal alignment and posture improvement (Fitzgerald v. Vibram USA, Inc.). More recent systematic review evidence (2025) supports genuine, measurable adaptations in foot muscle strength, morphology, and neuromuscular control associated with minimalist footwear use, particularly with gradual transition protocols — a materially different and better-supported claim than direct skeletal realignment reaching the lumbar spine, which remains, at present, a first-person report rather than an evidenced mechanism.

No single mechanism is proposed as sufficient to explain the month's changes. Manual soft-tissue work, footwear, a shift toward gentler practice, reduced loading, appropriate heat-related pacing, and sleep quality all plausibly contribute — "a compendium of reasons," in the researcher's own summary. This is stated as a methodological position rather than an evasion: a multi-causal account, honestly reported as such, is preferable to a single tidy mechanism the evidence does not actually support.

A separately conducted structural self-assessment, published on the project site in June 2026, offers a more granular account of the same territory: a lateral entrapment at the level of a mountaineering boot cuff, affecting the peroneal nerves more severely on the stroke-affected left side, and a medial "shin rope" — palpable, fluctuating in diameter, consistent with venous pooling secondary to atrial fibrillation and prolonged enforced rest — referring pain into the groin and consistent with the previously identified inguinal fascial injury. The two are modelled there as reciprocally tethered: medial congestion forcing a defensive weight shift, which increases lateral tension, which locks the fascia and refers pain back into the knee. The same account also documents that the four-year deconditioning cascade preceding this reporting period included a course of statin treatment producing muscle breakdown "approaching a state of clinical rhabdomyolysis" — a materially more serious finding than general myopathy, and worth stating at that weight rather than a softer one. This structural mapping is treated here as a rich, dated snapshot rather than a settled diagnosis, in line with the researcher's own explicit caveat accompanying it: such findings are "by their nature ethereal," recovery is "never a linear process," and a subsequent mapping session may alter the account. It is included on those terms, not stronger ones.

3. Recognition Transferred Inward — Or Never Actually Outward

Klein's recognition-primed decision model (Klein, 1998) describes how experienced practitioners under real conditions typically do not weigh discrete options analytically; they recognise a situation as an instance of a familiar pattern and act, often without conscious deliberation. This describes, with unusual precision, an account given in April of how technical mountain terrain would be approached: continuing without particular thought at one grade, then the next, then the next, the rope appearing only once the situation demanded it — no announced decision points, throughout. Tested against an actual instance rather than left as prediction, the account held: "It felt the way I anticipated it would, I would simply 'know' — the primary satisfaction was from knowing that it would not result in me falling over provided I proceeded with caution." Caution, notably, was built into the knowing rather than opposed to it. A phrase encountered this month in a stick-fighting context, though its better-documented roots lie in military and tactical training, captures the same structure: slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

The figure grounding this pattern is worth stating with more precision than it has previously been given. A passage in Bowman's Move Your DNA prompted a direct calculation, worked by hand across two dated sessions: 1993–2002, at 260 working days a year and six hours a day, comes to 14,040 hours — arithmetic that checks out exactly against the working shown. The full total for 1993–2018 comes to 43,640 hours, not the "approximately fifty thousand" this project has previously stated; a further period from 2018 to the present, estimated rather than calculated, plausibly closes the remaining gap. That later period is not simply bulk activity, however. The project's own published case-study material describes an eighteen-month, self-directed programme immediately following the 2018 stroke, centred specifically on implicit gait retraining over rugged, unpredictable terrain while walking dogs, reporting full resolution of foot-drop and a compensatory gait pattern by its end. The dog-walking hours closing this project's arithmetic gap were, on that account, never incidental volume. They were the deliberate method by which a first, earlier recovery was achieved — a claim held, again, at the weight the source itself assigns it: a self-report, not an independently verified clinical outcome.

A related methodological finding is worth recording in its own right: formal Mountain Leader quality-day logs, maintained for years before 2018, were not kept afterward. In the researcher's own account, this was not a change in the underlying activity but a change in where attention was going: "my brain was concerned with other things." The gap in the record is itself data about the stroke's cognitive effect, arguably more informative than a reconstructed hour count for that period could have been.

A further question — whether this pattern of recognition without deliberation is specific to terrain and the researcher's own body, or generalises further — produced a reframing rather than a confirmation: "It is specifically how I lead my life and have done so for a very, very long time." The mountain and the body are not, on this account, places the pattern extended to. They are simply where it has most recently been observed. A concrete instance from business rather than terrain illustrates this: following a sudden loss of household income, a decision to build a web presence and directory listing was made without extended deliberation — "it was simply the right step to take, and the universe agreed" — and income was replaced within a fortnight, doubled within a month. "The universe agreed" recurs at least twice more across this reporting period in different contexts (Qi described as flowing "like waves from the universe"; a moment of structural alignment in Tai Chi practice described as "where the universe lives"), suggesting a consistent personal vocabulary for registering a judgement as correct, worth noting as a stylistic and possibly epistemic pattern in its own right rather than three unconnected phrases.

Put to the obvious methodological challenge — that a single success story is weak evidence for a general claim about reliable judgement — a stated decision rule emerged rather than a defensive one: "If something doesn't work, it needs to be proved that it doesn't work. Three goes is enough, and one simply tinkers with the plan or discards it as necessary." This was explicitly and independently connected by the researcher to water as a governing image — "it's that river metaphor again, it's the Watercourse Way" — a direct reference to Alan Watts's final, posthumously completed work on Taoist philosophy (Watts & Huang, 1975), and a third distinct citable entry point this project has now found, independently, into the same underlying concept of wu wei, alongside Slingerland and Yang Jwing-Ming's reading of Laozi.

The most demanding test of this pattern's reliability, however, was not a business decision at all. Asked for an instance where the "just know" pattern had genuinely failed, the stroke itself was initially offered — "one go of that was enough for me to change course." On examination this does not quite answer the question as posed: a stroke is not a weighed decision, and the recognition process was never consulted. But reframed once more, it produced the strongest evidence in this section rather than none. The researcher's own account situates the stroke as "as much a culmination of the effects" of a sustained way of living as a discrete event, with warning signals present over a couple of years and not acted upon — not from a failure of recognition, but because "getting the kids fed took priority." This identifies a genuine boundary condition on Klein's model: recognition-primed judgement depends on attention actually reaching the relevant cues, and a legitimate, entirely defensible competing priority can silently prevent that from happening, with no decision ever appearing to have been made at all.

The account complicates further, and more seriously, on a second telling: the signals were in fact raised directly with health professionals on a number of occasions, and were told either that they did not matter, that there was nothing to be done, or — on discharge, with atrial fibrillation already on record — that there was nothing wrong beyond a packet of aspirin. This is a different failure than diverted attention. Recognition fired correctly and was communicated; institutional authority declined to act on it. This bears directly on Polanyi's account of tacit knowledge (Polanyi, 1958), which is typically only credited by institutions once translated into propositional, measurable form — here, that translation was made, explicitly, more than once, and still refused.

The researcher's own closing position on this is worth recording exactly, as a matter of intellectual discipline rather than diplomacy: "I cannot say whether the health professional responses are proportional, correct or acceptable. It simply 'is,' and I can deal with that." No judgement is offered on the clinical decisions themselves, years removed and without full possession of what was known and weighed at the time — a refusal to claim more certainty than the position actually supports, consistent with the same discipline exercised throughout this project regarding causal sequencing and mechanism. It is also, on its own terms, the Watercourse Way once more: no resistance offered to a fact that resistance cannot change.

4. Work, Play, and Two Structures of Attention

A distinction drawn this month between Qigong as "energy work" — following Yang Jwing-Ming's usage, itself grounded in a reading of Laozi — and Tai Chi Chuan as play proved productive beyond its immediate context. Qigong, in this framing, is prescriptive and results-oriented: locate a restriction, work it directly, assess for change. Tai Chi Chuan is open-ended, its depth understood as effectively inexhaustible regardless of accumulated practice, energy (Qi) generated through the former and circulated, spiralled, and directed rather than stored, through the latter.

This maps cleanly onto the month's larger structural shift: the prescriptive, targeted work (soft-tissue release, sacral and lumbar attention) sits with Qigong's register; the open-ended peripatetic wandering, resistant to a fixed endpoint, sits with Tai Chi Chuan's. In the researcher's own account of the latter: "You do not store the Qi. The Qi flows through you like waves from the universe. Pulsating" — rounded into a ball, spiralled around the torso and limbs, directed, but never held. The same underlying resource is differently prompted toward different outcomes without being a different resource in each case.

One refinement is necessary here, supplied when the distinction was tested against a change in practice partway through the reporting period: the Cheng Man-ch'ing 37-step form was deliberately paused during this month, under a "Patience Protocol" arising from the structural findings above, leaving Qigong as the only form-based practice actually running. Play, on this evidence, is not reducible to which discipline is being performed. It is a quality of attention available within Qigong itself — "going really slowly with everything so that I can really feel what is going on" — rather than something that arrives only once Tai Chi Chuan resumes. The distinction drawn earlier in this section should be read as work and play describing two modes of engagement, both currently exercised through Qigong practice, rather than as a strict mapping of one discipline to each mode.

The practice itself sits within a documentable lineage rather than an idiosyncratic routine. The daily Five Animals form follows the ten-movement sequence standardised by the Chinese Health Qigong Association, a body established by the Chinese state between 2000 and 2003 to formalise Hua Tuo's originally attributed Wu Qin Xi into a consistent, teachable form. The researcher's own practice departs from this standard deliberately — the bird posture altered, transitions smoothed across the whole sequence, arrived at "by studying other practitioners, applying what I see, adjusting according to feel" — a documented baseline held against a felt, individual variation, in the same structural relationship the fixed circuit once held against the walking that varied around it. A short Wudang eight-step form is being introduced alongside this during the reporting period, distinct in lineage from both the CHA's ten-movement Qigong sequence and from the separate Yang-style ten-step Tai Chi form referenced elsewhere in the researcher's training — three genuinely different short forms, easily and wrongly collapsed into one another by an outside observer, including, on first attempt, this one.

A further distinction is worth drawing precisely rather than left implicit. Asked directly how a mechanism observed in a third party — a horseman working with an injured animal — might relate to the researcher's own reported state during skilled practice, the answer distinguished them sharply: the horseman's gift was "knowing an animal as if it were themselves," an outward-facing attunement; the researcher's own experience was structurally different, "the dissociation allows one to examine fully in the moment, that which is occurring both within and without at one and the same time." This latter description — two channels, internal and external, attended simultaneously — resembles contemplative science's distinction between focused attention, narrow and single-object, and open monitoring, broad and non-selective (Lutz, Slagter, Dunne & Davidson, 2008), considerably more closely than it resembles Csikszentmihalyi's flow (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990), which is characterised by narrowing of attention onto a single, absorbing task with a merging of action and awareness. The two should not be treated as interchangeable in future analysis of this kind.

5. Reframing Divergence: Evidence, Speculation, and the Difference Between Them

A substantial theoretical thread developed this month, stated in the researcher's own terms: "We who are so classified are not the divergent ones; more that some see themselves as neurotypical, who are in fact the ones moving away from reality." The claim is not that ADHD-associated traits — heightened environmental sensitivity, rapid pattern recognition, difficulty with narrow sustained attention in low-stimulus settings — are deficits relative to a neutral baseline, but that they are traits poorly matched to a built, low-stimulus, indoor modern environment; and correspondingly, that "neurotypical" adaptation to that environment might itself be read as the more significant departure from an evolutionarily typical mode of attention. This argument draws on several distinct bodies of work that should not be treated as equally weighted.

Louv's concept of nature-deficit disorder (Louv, 2005) is a popularising, agenda-setting term rather than a primary research finding, but it correctly names a real and separately evidenced phenomenon. Hartmann's Hunter versus Farmer hypothesis (Hartmann, 1993) — that ADHD traits were adaptive for a foraging existence and became pathologised only under agricultural and industrial demands for sustained, narrow attention — is the more precise theoretical ancestor of this month's independently developed argument, and should be cited as such rather than presented as original. Hartmann himself was explicit that the hypothesis was not intended as rigorous science; it remains genuinely contested, has received some serious academic engagement (Coolidge & Wynn, 2001), and should be presented in any formal piece as a provocative, citable frame rather than an established finding.

The considerably stronger evidential ground is Kuo and Faber Taylor's peer-reviewed research: a national US study found green outdoor settings associated with significantly reduced ADHD symptom severity, consistently across income, gender, and geography, with the effect attributable to the presence of green space itself rather than outdoor activity generally (Kuo & Faber Taylor, 2004); a follow-up controlled study found measurably improved concentration after a guided walk in a natural setting compared with an equivalent walk in a built urban setting (Taylor & Kuo, 2009). This is genuine, replicated, dose-responsive evidence, and it is the evidence this project's practice-based claims about "outdoor environments realigning sensory input" should actually rest on.

A related first-person claim raised this month — the perception of "auras" — is treated here neither as literal energetic perception nor as error, but as most plausibly an instance of the same tacit-knowledge phenomenon discussed in Section 1: highly trained observers integrate a wide range of genuine physiological cues (colour, posture, breath, micro-tension) faster and more holistically than they can consciously enumerate them (Polanyi, 1958). This reading is offered as the more defensible of the two available explanations, neither dismissing the reported perception nor requiring an unevidenced energetic mechanism to account for it — and it stands in explicit contrast to a separate and actively contested literature proposing literal quantum-mechanical mechanisms for biofield phenomena, criticised sharply and recently within the relevant medical research community (Ernst, 2025) for extending quantum-mechanical vocabulary well past what the underlying physics supports.

6. Validity, Transferability, and the Ethics of an N=1 Method

The researcher's own position, stated plainly: "I don't think I wish for people to 'do what I am doing,' rather that I wish to show how powerful I believe my approach is and that anybody could explore themselves and their own possibilities in this fashion if they wanted to. That they would do it in their own way is also a thing." This is transferability in Lincoln and Guba's precise sense (1985) — thick, honest description from which a reader assesses fit to their own situation, rather than a generalised finding imposed upon them — arrived at independently, in the researcher's own vocabulary, before the term itself was supplied.

The refusal to offer direct advice has a specific, stated ethical basis rather than functioning as a generic disclaimer: "Nobody else has injured themselves in the ways that I have, thus any advice I might give would be based on false, although similar, premises." An unrepeatable, particular stack of prior injury and medical history means that specific advice — do this, it will help — would rest on a false premise of comparability that this project explicitly declines to offer.

The question was put directly during this reporting period: "I think a lot of modern healing modalities are bunkum, or at the very least a misunderstanding of the science. For there is science that determines that cellular activity creates a kind of measurable electrical phenomenon. What the ultimate healing benefits are is only explicable through personal anecdote. Now, if that personal anecdote can be measured and quantified, is that not science?" The answer is yes, with a specific and non-trivial condition attached. Quantified self-observation of this kind sits within the recognised methodology of single-case experimental design (Kazdin, 2011), used precisely where an N of one is the only available or appropriate sample. What separates disciplined single-case observation from anecdote is not the presence of numbers but three specific practices: consistent measurement regardless of whether anything notable has occurred; genuine openness to disconfirmation rather than selective retention of confirming instances; and active vigilance regarding the observer's simultaneous role as instrument, experimenter, and interested party. This project has, at several points during the reporting period, produced and then corrected its own premature causal narratives when checked against dated evidence — most notably a claim about the sequence between renewed motivation and a specific somatic intervention, corrected once the recorded dates were checked and did not support the order first proposed. These corrections are retained in the record rather than smoothed out of it, consistent with Ellis and Bochner's position that the researcher's uncertainty and revision are themselves legitimate data in autoethnographic work, not noise requiring removal prior to publication (Ellis & Bochner, 2000).

This project's evidential standing is stronger than a strict N=1 label suggests, on evidence supplied late in this reporting period: the researcher's own case-study material describes seven distinct prior cycles of rebuilding gait mechanics following major neurological or systemic events, of which the period covered here is the latest. Single-case experimental design treats repeated demonstration within one subject as a genuine strength rather than a limitation to be apologised for (Kazdin, 2011) — closer, structurally, to a multiple-baseline design than to an isolated case report, even though no two cycles have been formally logged and compared against one another with the discipline this project now applies. That comparison does not yet exist and is not claimed here; its absence is noted as a limitation for future work, not papered over as already accomplished.

Conclusion

None of the frameworks tested here survived contact with a month of lived data entirely unmodified. Dreyfus required substantial qualification; the kinetic-chain model required a distinction between epistemology and ontology it had not previously needed to make explicit; flow required separation from a structurally different account of divided attention; the Hunter-Farmer hypothesis required downgrading from citation to provocation; Klein's model required an explicit boundary condition once attention itself was shown capable of being legitimately, silently diverted — or correctly exercised and institutionally overridden. This is reported as the expected and appropriate outcome of testing theory against a single, real, ongoing case, not as a shortfall in either the theory or the case.

Cyfrwy Arête remains the waypoint this inquiry is currently organised around, not its terminus. The International Mountain Leader award, once the intended next stage of a professional trajectory that this degree has structurally replaced, is not returning as a qualification — "no provider or assessor in their right mind would entertain" it, on the researcher's own frank assessment of current physical capacity. What may return is the scale of ambition it once represented, relocated: Curved Ridge on Buachaille Etive Mòr (Grade 2/3, a genuine step up in seriousness from Welsh terrain but still within scrambling rather than technical climbing) and Triglav (Slovenia's highest peak, its standard routes secured by fixed cable and via ferrata rather than free technical climbing) have both been named as candidate objectives for a prospective MRes phase. Given prior, extensive personal familiarity with both the Julian Alps and, once, the Himalaya, the function of such objectives is more precisely described as recalibration than acclimatisation — not building tolerance to unfamiliar altitude, but checking whether a changed body still performs on ground already known and trusted, before any commitment to genuinely unfamiliar terrain beyond it.

A dated prediction is worth recording here rather than only in retrospect: the current twenty-eight-day Qigong and Tai Chi phase is expected to prove more revealing than the fixed-circuit walking that preceded it, not because the practice itself carries more information, but because, in the researcher's own account, "I can 'see' more clearly" — a claim about the sharpening of the observing instrument rather than about the richness of what is being observed. Future analysis should note explicitly whether this prediction held.

Should any of this be reached early, the inquiry does not run out of material. It simply asks what renegotiating gravity looks like on whatever comes next — a disposition closer, on reflection, to Pu than to Shoshin. Beginner's mind describes a stance renewable within any single session; the uncarved block describes a state prior to being fixed into one settled, finished shape at all. Seven prior cycles of rebuilding, a degree that replaced one ambition and may yet recover it in another form, a project whose next question is already implied before the current one is answered — none of this is well described as repeatedly approaching tasks freshly. It is better described, in the researcher's own correction of the term, simply as unfinished, and not seeking to become otherwise.
